  • Get enough sleep, but not too much. I have found that my personal optimum is 6 hours per night, generally at least 8 hours is better. Even though your metabolism slows down during sleep, this is the prime time that your body takes to heal itself and build new cells.

  • Never skip breakfast! Because of the fact that your metabolism slows down during sleep, having a good nutritious breakfast will be the catalyst to get it going in a good way.

  • Eat 4-6 meals daily, and snack in between. By eating regularly, your metabolism stays active through out the day, in stead of being given one humongous task when you have that once or twice daily meal. By eating frequently (about every 2-3 hours) you'll keep your metabolism humming in tune and keep your body burning fat at an optimal rate.

  • Don't ever go on a starvation diet. Your body will go into a mode known as "the starvation response". This means that your body will try to save energy and burn fewer calories. It does that by slowing down its metabolism.

  • Select natural, unprocessed foods with a high metabolic effect (lean proteins like poultry, egg whites and fish, as well as green vegetables and other fibrous carbohydrates).

  • Increase your lean body mass. Muscle tissue requires more calories just to maintain itself, so you burn more fat and calories even when you're sleeping.

  • Keep moving. At the least try to walk for at least 30 minutes each day. Force yourself to do things the hard way. Walk to the shop instead of driving, take the stairs instead of the elevator, move around when you're on the phone, instead of sitting down.

  • Drink plenty of water. Your kidneys need plentiful water supply to function properly. And if your kidneys are not functioning optimally, they will call in the liver for assistance. One of the primary functions of the liver is to metabolize stored fat for the body to use as energy. So, it is only logical to say that if the liver is half occupied doing what the kidneys cannot do on their own due to lack of water, then it will not be able to perform its own functions effectively.

But, in conclusion, if you are looking for ways to increase your metabolism, you will need to focus more on your exercise, and not your food. Change Your Mind to Change Your Life - How to Harness Some of the Power of Your Brain to Lose Weight

6 Ways to Prevent Holiday Weight Gain

Obesity has worldwide problem. In fact, almost 2/3 of Americans need to lose weight and over 1 billion people in the world are overweight. If you are overweight, you need to lose weight and improve your health and fitness. And yes, this can still be done over the holiday season. Don't wait for New Year's day to start your weight loss resolutions.

There are a number of reasons for the increased incidence of obesity and overweight individuals, as suggested by American statistics, but also a number of workout and nutrition tips that can counter the effects of each bad nutrition and exercise habit that we have:

* It has been estimated that for every high-sugar drink you consume, you increase your risk of obesity by 60%! Soft drinks provide 33% of all added sugars in American diets.

Tip #1: Avoid drinking calories!

* In the USA, sugar consumption has increased from 26 to 32 teaspoons (between the 1970s and 1998).

* Americans eat an extra 150 kcal per day now in comparison to 1980. In theory, this could lead to 15 lbs. of weight gain per year!

Tip #2: Avoid over-eating treats at parties. If you can't have just one, don't have any at all!

* Your obesity risk increases 6-fold if you watch more than 2 hours of television each day.

Tip #3: Stay active. Walk around the mall a couple extra times if it means you'll avoid the couch and overeating at home. Stay busy, stay active, stay lean.

* Only 25% of individuals exercise moderately for 30 minutes each day, whereas 25% of the population does no exercise at all.

Tip #4: It's not all or nothing. If you can only do 15 minutes of exercise, that is still better than nothing. Don't stop all exercise just because you can't do 30 minutes that day.

* Obesity continues to increase in the USA despite a continued decrease in the consumption of dietary fat. In 1994-96, fat accounted for 33% of total calories compared with 40% in the late 1970's.

* In 1994-96, just over half of the population reported eating fruit each day while the consumption of processed carbohydrates (such as bread, snack foods, and cereals) has increased 110% since the late 1970's.

Tip #5: Avoid processed carbs. Hit the veggie tray, the protein offerings, and the calorie free beverages at parties. If its rolled in pastry, don't eat it.

* Milk consumption has decreased in children by 16% since the late 1970's, while consumption of soft drinks increased by 16%.

Tip #6: Don't keep soda in the house. If you don't buy it, neither you nor the kids will drink it.

Questioning Cardio for Weight Loss?

Q: I've heard you mention that you don't need tons of cardio to burn stubborn abdominal fat. Okay, I can live with that, but you've also said that it isn't absolutely necessary to perform direct ab work either. What gives?

A: If you want to build a serious set of abdominals, routinely perform the following exercises and their variations: squats, deadlifts, chin-ups, and standing military presses. These multi-joint movements require a strong contribution from the abdominals to stabilize the core, particularly when heavy loads are used. It is not uncommon to hear clients complain of abdominal soreness a day or two after performing multiple sets with a decent weight of the chin-up or standing military press exercise - the ab prestretch will tap into fibers you never thought existed! And remember, your abdominals act as a natural girdle, or weight belt if you will, when performing all exercises, particularly squats and deadlifts. These muscles act as a bridge between your upper and lower body and are heavily recruited as stabilizers.

Sure, isolation exercises like pullovers, curls, and even triceps pressdowns also require a good degree of core stability; however, the loads used are relatively low compared to the big 4 mentioned above. In fact, according to Siff & Verkhoshansky, isolation becomes virtually impossible if large loads are used, and in many cases, the tension developed in the stabilizers will equal or even exceed that of the prime movers!* So, you see, the abdominals can be trained quite effectively as stabilizers - the physiques of top Olympic weightlifters will attest to that.

Q: I am still very much confused regarding cardio intensity. One book says keep it low intensity (i.e. 60% of MHR) and go for distance; another keep it high intensity (80% or more) and go for as long and hard as you can. The goal is to burn fat. Each book has great arguments for their approach. Which is accurate?

A: The second approach is far more effective for burning fat. Without getting into a huge discussion about this, here's how things work in a nutshell.

At a lower intensity, your body prefers fat for fuel. Yes, this is true, but two things generally happen:

1. After awhile of doing this type of activity, your body adapts by actually laying down fat (you heard me right) to become more efficient at the given task and this usually occurs in the lower body, and

2. A higher relative amount of fat is burned during low intensity cardio but a greater absolute amount is burned with higher intensity cardio and in less time.

Other things to consider are: a) the EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) is greater for a longer duration following higher intensity work; in other words, you're metabolism is much higher for a longer period of time post-workout with high intensity cardio, and b) higher lactate levels exist with high intensity cardio. So what you may ask? Well there is a direct correlation with lactate and GH (Growth Hormone) and GH is a potent fat-burner.

Bottom line: with regards to burning fat, do higher intensity work in the form of interval training and you'll get great results.

Food Pantry Patrol - Get Rid of the Goodies That Are Undermining Your Weight Loss

You have an enemy within. Within your kitchen that is. Open your pantry or refrigerator and you may find all sorts of landmines. Candy, chips, soda, ice cream, cookies...you must declare all of these former friends as foes when your goal is to lose weight.

Do you know how to dramatically increase your odds to lose weight? Throw out everything in your kitchen and pantry that stands in your way. Give your junk food away, burn it, toss it in the trash so fast you don't have time to change your mind. This might sound crazy but losing weight is all about access. If you have cookies available, you will eat them. Whenever there's chocolate in the house, you will find it. But if you only have fruit and vegetables on hand, guess what? You'll eat that instead and you will lose weight.

Nine weeks after I had my baby, I wasn't eating sugar except for a once a month treat. But one night, we had guests over for dessert. As long as I was going to blow it, I chose my favorite cheat...ice cream. I was very proud of the small bowl I served myself. Our friends brought over a dozen donuts. After they left, I had to hide the box in the oven so those glazed goodies would stop taunting me. The next morning, my husband gave the donuts away to a business associate. 1. Ask your husband and kids to eat healthy with you for a certain length of time. Try eating healthy at home for one month.

2. Put all the junk food in a big box and seal it up with shipping tape. Store it in a closet and don't open it until a certain date or until you lose a certain amount of weight. Label it clearly, "Do not open before May 1" or "Do not open until mom weighs 130 pounds."

3. If asking your family to give up their junk food is next to impossible, then label the junk food in your house. Put your husband's name on the bag of chips. Your kid's name on the soda can. These things belong to your family; they do not belong to you. They are off limits.

Today's action step: Go to your pantry. Now purge - throw away junk food, label it with your kid's names, give it away to your skinny friends. Go and do it now, before you change your mind!

For an effective calf stretch, stand a foot or so in front of a wall. Place your arm up against the wall while bringing one leg in towards the wall, while keeping your legs straight. Your body should for a 45-degree angle. Repeat with the other leg.

Next, sitting on the floor, stretch both legs out in front of you. Gently bending at the waist, stretch only as far as your arms will reach. Do not try to necessarily touch your toes. Keep knees flexible. The focus of this exercise is to stretch the muscles in the lower back, thighs and calves. Remember to breathe deeply.

Opening legs into the shape of a "V," bend slowly toward the right leg. Do not bounce. Then bend toward the left leg.

To stretch the lower back, lay flat on your mat. Fold one leg onto your chest and hold. Remember to breathe. Repeat with the other leg. Then, bring both legs into your chest at the same time and hold.

Maintaining Good Health isn't Rocket Science

This week the media claimed, "A calorie is a calorie". They were citing a new study, which found that burning a calorie through exercise or removing it from your diet is equal for losing fat. The study was somewhat controversial because it has long been accepted that combining exercise with dieting makes it easier to lose weight.

Exercise increases your body's sensitivity to its own insulin and that makes it easier to lose fat, especially around the mid-section. However, the new study said it didn't make any difference. They concluded that it is not possible to lose weight from target' areas and that your genes dictate where your weight loss comes from. I see several problems with their arguments.

Is a calorie a calorie?

First, the new study only looked at a small number of people and that makes it difficult to make general assumptions. Second, the study only used a very strict diet, making it difficult to generalize for many types of foods. Third, the study only employed cardiovascular exercise and not weight training, which has been shown to increase insulin sensitivity. So, although the experiment told us something about how exercise burns calories, the conclusions went a little too far.

Finally, the media's interpretation of the study was misleading as well. In stating that a calorie is a calorie' the media suggests that it doesn't matter what kinds of food you eat, but that it is really the total calorie content that matters. This is not what the study concluded at all. The researchers were simply comparing reducing calories in the diet to burning them through exercise. They made no conclusions about which sources of calories were better than others.

This is just another example of the media exaggerating the results. No wonder people are so confused about health advice. The media's constant misinterpretation of the data makes people think that researchers are always changing their minds on health issues.

It's all about Balance

Maintaining health is really not that hard. Many of us over-think the problem. Using a common sense, maintaining a diet balanced in fats, carbohydrates and proteins, taking a quality multivitamin and getting some exercise goes a long way.

Balance is a critical issue in any dietary change. Fad diets that tout low-carb or low-fat are very short sited. Most people are surprised to hear that the brain is 60% fat! And several types of fat needed for brain function must come from the diet meaning the body can't make them. What this means is that trying to remove too much fat, especially polyunsaturated fat, from the diet can actually starve the brain.

When is fat good?

In fact, a report that came out of Sweden this week showed that some kids were overweight because they didn't get enough of the right kind of fat. The Swedish researchers found that kids who didn't eat enough poly-unsaturated fat, mostly omega-3 fats, actually had a higher chance of being overweight.

The brain is also an energy hog. It uses about 10% of the energy you eat even though it only accounts for about 2% of total body mass. Where does most of our energy come from? - carbohydrates and fat. A balanced diet is about 15% fat, 60% carbohydrate and 25% protein. Athletes may need a little more carbohydrate for endurance or protein for strength.

So please don't subscribe to fad diets that tell you to cut out all the fat or carbohydrates from your diet. They're not good for your body and they're not good for your brain.
