3 Secret Flaws With Calorie Counting Dieting Your Nutritionist Isn't Telling You?

Calorie counting is a great way to manage your weight loss program.

Essentially you can use calorie counting to drop your weight to your desired level and also use it to maintain your target weight to avoid yo-yo dieting pattern.

To achieve this, you have to get into the habit of tracking the amount of calories or energy in every food or drink that you consume.

The general guiding principle behind calorie counting for weight loss management is that in order for you to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume daily.

You either do this by eating less calories than your pre-determined daily requirement or you introduce some form of exercise to help burn more calories than your daily consumption or a combination of both.

So effectively calories out should exceed calories in.

When starting out with calorie counting, it is important that you first of all establish your daily caloric need or requirement.

Now this varies from person to person because your actual daily calorie requirements depends on a host of factors such as your age, sex, height, current weight, and indeed your level of activity.

When you have sorted out your basal metabolic rate you are then required to keep a daily log of all the calories in the food and drinks you consume daily as well as an 'exercise and activity log'. This is to ensure that you tilt yourself into a negative calorie balance because that is how you lose weight.

Keeping these Food logs alongside Exercise and Activity logs can be a nightmare without the help of a reliable calorie counting software or fitness software. However, all calorie counters or fitness software are not created equal.

I had experienced difficulty with calorie counting dieting and calorie counting software for years, so I embarked on a research to discover why you lose some weight initially but the loss just seems to tail off after a while.

Here are the flaws I came up with.

1. Your Rigid Calorie Diet is doomed to fail.

Something that happens when you are on a rigid calorie diet is that your weight loss results become affected by the law of diminishing returns over time.

Your calorie counting software may advise you to consume say 2200 calories a day and you follow that religiously only to discover that you are not shifting enough pounds as you would like to as time goes on.

How, you ask?. You see, in the first 2 weeks of our weight loss program, we may burn say 500 calories a day but as we move into week 3 and beyond, our body's metabolic rate slows down and may start burning about 450 calories or less.

Therefore, your rigid or fixed calorie counting diet weight loss results begin to diminish as a result.

2. Calorie Counting software are programmed to count one pound of weight loss as being equivalent to 3500 calories.

This is wrong. Yes, one pound of fat loss is equivalent to 3500 calories but you lose more than fat when you lose weight i.e you lose water and you also lose lean body.

Although you lose more fat at the initial stages of your weight loss program, you will eventually start to lose lean body mass as time goes on.

If you burn 3500 calories of fat, you lose one pound of weight. However, the story is different with lean body mass. In fact, the calorie loss requirement to lose one pound of lean body mass is totally different. This does not even include variables like your body mass index (BMI) which is important.

Now most calorie counters and weight loss software do not take this into consideration when they churn out results. They simply make one universal assumption of 3500 caloric loss is equivalent to one pound loss. Wrong.

3. Exercise and normal daily activity calorie use overlap which calorie counters miscalculate.

In your normal daily routine activities like browsing the internet as you are doing right now, you do burn calories. You may burn say 50 calories just being idle. Now if you mount your exercise bike, your calorie counter may advise 240 calories has been used up by you.

Well, at the completion of that biking exercise, you have actually burnt 190 calories i.e 240 deduct or take away 50.

Why.....because the 50 calories is what you would have spent anyway even without mounting the exercise bike and this must be taken into account when you do the calorie math.

However, your calorie counter or fitness software does not know this and will report 240 calories.... and you wonder why you have difficulty achieving your weight loss goals.

The point being made here is that your calorie counter tends to overestimate calories spent thereby giving you a false sense of achievement.

Now you know why you have failed to achieve sustained weight loss with calorie counting and calorie counters in the past. Weight Loss Tip #4 - Count the Once-in-a-While's

I was 25 pounds over my comfortable weight and had been trying to lose for many months. I was very conscious of what I was eating, but did not want to suffer on a restrictive diet. So, I was letting myself have special treats "once in a while". My attempts at losing weight just were not making the scale budge at all. What was the deal?

What I later realized was that the 'once-in-a-while's add up quickly! I knew that I rarely ate 'junk food' like candy bars or cakes, donuts or desserts. So I figured having them once in a while wouldn't do much harm. I had an almond joy one day in January because I knew it had been at least six months since I did anything like that. I had a piece of birthday cake at an office party later that week because I almost never ate cake at home. I had dessert out at a restaurant that Friday night because it was extremely rare that we would order anything after dinner. I had french fries on the side when we ate out on the weekend because I knew it was so seldom I ate them. But in doing so, I neglected to realize I had added another third of a pound to my body weight over just that week!

My warped sense of 'dieting' went on through the months; observing what I ate, observing the scale not budging. "I can drive through McDonald's today on my way to the library because I haven't eaten here in at least two weeks". "We can order chinese food tonight because it's been three weeks since we did that". "Ordering a pizza sounds convenient for dinner, and I know we haven't had pizza for almost two weeks". "Donuts? I almost never eat them--I'll just have a little treat today". Another pound not lost that week.

Think about how many times you are eating a food that you know is too high in calories to allow you to proceed with your weight loss regimen. Most of the clients I meet with have the same story as I did: Shaking their head, they tell me "I rarely eat fast food, pizza, desserts, cookies, chips--Maybe just once in a while". Chances are, you may be eating a "once-in-a-while" food once a month, and you may have 30 of these foods on your list. That means every day you are eating one of these foods you know are not a good idea to eat. Every day you are adding 300 or 400 calories to your dietary intake. That means if you stop having these calorie-dense foods, you can lose three or four pounds this month! Not by dieting, not by starving, not by adhering to a strict regimen. Just by thinking about these splurges and going one more day without them.

My suggestion is to have a 'once-in-a-while' day' once a week. Choose a day you'd like--let's say Sunday. Your plan is, Monday through Saturday you watch what you eat, make healthy choices, have plenty of fruits, vegetables, water, lean meats, low fat dairy products, whole grain breads and cereals, and very low calorie desserts like diet jello or a 100 calorie package of cookies if you get a sweet tooth. Sunday you can have your 'once-in-a-while' treat: order a pizza, go to a chinese restaurant (I did not say buffets, there!), enjoy a piece of homemade pie or cake at a family get together, go out for breakfast, or go to your favorite fast food place and enjoy one of their meals (not super-sized, of course). Choose ONE of these treats and relish the taste, knowing you were not ingesting all this fat and salt during the week, and knowing that truly having this food you like just once in a while is not unreasonable and will not make you fat.

Then go back to your well-balanced healthy eating habits on Monday, knowing you satisfied your craving and you can enjoy another treat next weekend. It's not about deprivation, it's about moderation!

Motivation for Sustained Weight Loss

Here are the useful steps for motivation for weight loss and sustaining it:

  • When you want to go on a diet/exercise program, do it for YOUR WELL BEING, YOUR HEALTH and not just because you want to impress somebody, or your partner insists that you do so, etc.

  • Because if you go in for the wrong reasons, you tend to take up extreme quick fixes fad diets that works short term but cannot sustain you for long term. And when your diet plan failed to deliver the desired results, remember, it's not that you have no willpower- it's likely the plan's impractical or unrealistic to follow.

  • But still, initially, cut down as much as you can on sugar and refined carbs: especially if you tend to suffer from constant fatigue, lethargy & mood swings from bad eating habits for long.

  • But you can take your sugar sources from fruits. When I started, I bring a Tupperware to work filled to the brim with fruits- I was snacking the whole day on fruits- that makes me feeling less deprived.

  • At home, arrange fresh fruits in nice plates/baskets and place at a highly visible place. Put chocolates and cookies at places where you cannot see them.

  • Start an exercise program at the same time. If it is not convenient for you to join a gym, then get into an exercise program- buy DVDs, exercise bikes, daily brisk walks, check out YouTube for exercise videos. Any activity to get you going- start small and the well being that you feel will make you slowly increase.

  • Weight training really helps- you built up muscles (and if you are a woman, need not worry, you will not bulk up) which in turn increases your endurance during cardio activity. Ultimately this makes you burn up more and more calories per workout. During the time you are not exercising, you also feel less tired, your metabolic rate goes up and carrying things becomes much easier than it used to.

Continuous Sustenance:

  • After your body stabilizes and you regain good health (from exercise & sensible eating), you can squeeze in a cookie or a piece chocolate after a meal- but try to keep the portions real small. I believe if we were to totally deprive ourselves of our favourite foods, we are setting our self up for failure because we will end up binging and hate ourselves afterward.

  • Accompany your little indulgence with lots of citrus fruits (especially grapefruit)/raw vegetables preferably taken before the indulgence. If you do that, it reduces your sugar blues (mood swings, dizziness that happens as the result of rapid rise and drop in blood sugar levels). The fibre and low GI index of the fruit/vegetables helps stabilize your blood sugar levels. With this, I do not mean eating a packet of M&M and then eat an orange. It's more that limit yourself about 3 M&Ms and a grapefruit. Do not worry, after a while, it becomes a habit- you would incorporate any indulgence with fruits/vegetables.

  • Learn also to eat with more mindfulness and awareness. Note how your body feel after the food. After a while, you will be conscious that your body are not that well when you start shoving unhealthy, fatty, greasy and highly processed food into it. And that will make you put down your spoon after the first few bites.

  • Learn to conquer emotional eating ie eating food for comfort. Have courage to confront underlying issues that may be bothering you or making you unhappy. Filling your self with junk because you feel 'empty' will not solve your problems- in fact, it will end up making you feel much worst and you will likely resent yourself after that. Bottled feelings/ stress, coupled with bad eating habits can led to many diseases such as high blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes and cancer- these cases are evident and most of us would have personally known people who suffer from these illness.

People are always looking for a miracle diet that will magically cause the weight to disappear. However, they just don't work. Oxygen Therapy For Weight Loss?

The chemistry sounds very straightforward. Human body fat is a combination of three elements - hydrogen, carbon and oxygen molecules (plus other substances that are stored within the fat cells).

Add extra oxygen to the body fat, and in theory it should break down into two well known substances:

  1. Hydrogen & oxygen molecules (H2O - water, which enters the blood stream, goes through the kidneys and is then excreted via urination); &
  2. Carbon & oxygen molecules (CO2 - carbon dioxide, which is excreted via respiration).

Oxygen or Ozone Therapies are used by a number of alternative medicine practitioners around the world. It is more popular in Europe than in the USA. Practitioners are also found in Canada and Mexico.

Despite being banned in some countries and certainly debunked by large sections of the "conventional" medical profession, there is plenty of evidence that oxygen therapy produces health benefits for many conditions far cheaper, much faster and without the side effects of patent drugs.

Oxygen therapy is usually administered in one of two ways:

  1. A facial mask attached to an oxygen tank, so that the patient breaths in oxygen for many hours of the day; or
  2. Daily sessions of diluted hydrogen peroxide administered via an intravenous drip.

Given the straightforward chemical composition of body fat discussed above, does Oxygen Therapy actually work for weight loss? I decided to contact a number of practitioners in various parts of the world and ask them if, when treating patients for other ailments using oxygen therapies, weight loss was ever seen as a side-effect of their treatment.

All the doctors who replied responded that no such weight loss factor has ever been observed that they could credit to the oxygen therapy itself, and not the condition they were treating.

It seems that empirical evidence to support the theory that oxygen therapy could reduce body fat into the easily excreted H2O and CO2 is lacking.

Still, not everyone is convinced. The chemistry appears fine on paper, so something is missing in the implementation. Finding that missing factor could be crucial in the battle of the bulge, the quest for weight loss, and conquering obesity.

Books have been written promoting special breathing techniques for weight loss. Although there are sceptics, there are also many people around the world who swear by the success they have achieved in losing weight via these breathing techniques.

The theory behind these breathing techniques is not merely due to the intake of the oxygen, but that the human body's metabolic process expels waste matter, including carbon dioxide, when we breath out. Our air intake is higher in oxygen than what we expire, and we breath out more carbon dioxide than we breath in.

The breathing technique therefore seeks to encourage and maximize the expulsion of carbon dioxide from our bodies - carbon dioxide that is the waste matter created when the oxygen dissolves body fat.

Personally, I must admit to being impressed though not thoroughly convinced. It is quite reasonable to assume that the people who are disciplined enough to follow this breathing technique diligently for several weeks or months are probably motivated enough to also be doing other things (dietary, psychologically, etc.) that will be causing the weight loss.

Still, it fits the basic (unproven) theory that adding oxygen to body fat should result in weight loss. Furthermore, it is harmless, so long as adequate dietary intake of antioxidant vitamins and minerals are being consumed. Whether the actual results are from the technique itself or of a more psychosomatic nature is immaterial if it works, is free and available to all, and has no adverse side effects.

By all means, add these deep breathing exercises to your overall toolbox of synergistic weight loss treatments.

Still, there is one more form of oxygen therapy (not usually recognized as such) that even the sceptics would have trouble disputing.

It is more commonly called exercise. More accurately, aerobic exercise. (Aerobic simply means "air breathing".) It is exercise that makes you huff and puff, deepening your breathing. It is and always has been one of the most fundamental parts of any successful weight loss program.

Achieving Weight Loss Through Affirmations

You should say your weight loss affirmations out loud, and try to use them in the way that you think, and you should be much better off.

You have been trained since birth by the media to desire more than you need, some of this may be good, but there is a lot of it that is bad. The good can be the desire to achieve the best in life, good education, nice house, general comfort in lifestyle. The bad is where you are tricked into believing more is better by industries that thrive on your consumption. Such industries like fast food, tobacco are the most obvious and dubious, but consider the food industry in general, do you really need to super size just because it is better value for your buck, and ask yourself why it is better value? The answer is obvious is it not, because more consumption equals greater profits! These industries are willing to give larger portions of food at a cheaper price because they are in fact training you to believe that more is better, by doing this the food industries are increasing over all consumption, quantity is where these large industries make their profits, just look at all the All you can eat franchises, sure they say its healthy in some of them all you can eat salad bars etc, but too much even of a good thing is still bad!

Take one second and think on this, lets us say that you are looking at two sub sandwich stores, store A offers a good sized sub for $3, in fact the sandwich is exactly the right amount to slake your hunger, now store B has a big sign that says 20% more meat in our sub, but is also $3, which would you buy? Most of us wouldnt hesitate and Store B would rake in our business, but really do you need that extra 20%? We as consumers are always looking for the best bargain for our dollar, but in the end is over eating really a bargain we wish to be a part of it, look at what it is really costing you, your self esteem, your fitness and mostly your health! With heart disease, diabetes and obesity on the rise in so many places, I will say it again; the push towards over consumption by the food industry has the stench of big tobacco all over it.

Losing weight is a very difficult process for those of us who suffer from over eating, for many of us food has become an addiction, much akin to Tobacco. As with any addiction the first step is realizing that you are in fact addicted, after that the next and most crucial step in de-toxing that addiction from your body and more importantly from your mind, is to reprogram yourself, to solely retrain your body and mind to crave only what it needs, this is the real challenge in maintaining weight loss! I will sum up a few points that may help you get on the path to healthier food consumption:

Just because you feel hungry there is no need to completely fill the tank, instead consider your expected activities on that day and eat accordingly, just like your car, if you are only driving to the end of the street you dont need a full tank of gas!

Do not binge eat, you can starve yourself and effectively shrink your stomach size (a practice I am very much against, but using as an example here), but with only one gorge binge session you will effectively revert your appetite back to an unhealthy level and begin feeling hungry all over again, a binge eating session is much the same as an alcoholic falling off the wagon, instead I recommend many small healthy meals throughout the course of the day!

Realize that junk food tastes great for one reason only, to get you hooked! It does not constitute food in any way shape or form, remove it from your diet and believe me you will not miss it once the addiction fades

It all comes down to a single phrase which you will have heard before. Healthy mind equals a healthy body!
